Amanda Knox: A Pop Culture Obsession

http://http//www.cnn.com/2011/10/03/world/europe/knox-obsession-continues/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

The four year saga of the Knox trial is over, with an Italian court overturning her guilty verdict and allowing her to finally return home. However, the most interesting part about the whole trial is how obsessed mainstream America has become with Amanda Knox. With Knox now free, the next question is which media outlet will get the first interview from her once she returns home.

Movie deals are apparently in the works as well. The guardian reported that famous filmmaker Michael Winterbottom is eager to make a movie about the trial. There are even rumours that Colin Firth is set to play a journalist covering the story.

And it doesn't stop there. Knox's name never fell out of the top five trending topics on Monday, which is incredible especially with today's ever-chaning news stories. From CNN.com to Twitter, people were live blogging while Amanda Knox was in an Italian courtroom learning of her fate. Numerous celeberties even took to their twitters to voice their opinions on the Knox verdict. The world just can't seem to get enough of Amanda Knox.

Social Media played a huge role in conceiving of international images for Knox. To some she was the beautiful and innocent American who was the victim of sloppy police work. To others she was a "witch" and "she-devil". Numerous books have been written about her including one entitled "Angel Face" and another "The Fatal Gift of Beauty: The Trials of Amanda Knox". Many believe that it is Amanda's looks that has attracted her so much attention. Nina Burleigh, author of a book on the Knox trial believes the reason she was falsely convicted was because she was so attractive.

The obsessive media attention says a lot about the priorities of American culture. For people are more interested in the superficial aspects of the case and seem to have forgoten that an innocent women, Meredith Kercher, lost her life.
