“‘Our culture is changing and our biology is trying to keep up,’ he said. ‘But culture changes faster — genes can’t change fast enough to keep up with iPads.’”
The above quote is from an article concerning a study of recent evolution on the island Île aux Courdes, near Quebec. The article considers the idea, and data which supports it, that evolution can occur quickly. The case on the island concerns the change in age of women marrying and an increase in the number of children they have.
But what I find more interesting is the above quote. The article does bring up the need to differentiate between evolutionary changes and shift in cultural norms. The comparison between the progress of technology, which occurs so frequently it makes my head spin, to that of humanity is intriguing. Is there a need for evolution to keep up with technology? Do we need to evolve faster?
With bounds in technology, studying human development because more in depth, perhaps with a furthering of research equipment, we will find that humans are altering in ways not previously noted.
